New Orleans - Day 1

A couple months back we decided that we seriously needed a vacation and that a four day weekend trip to New Orleans would suffice. Not having a lot of money, we decided to drive there and we booked a really good rate on a hotel online.

We got up early and headed out at about 8:30 AM. The drive is generally about 8 hours, but we made terrible time. There was intermittent rain the whole way there. In addition, we drove through numerous construction sites on I-10 once we hit Louisiana. By the time we made it to Baton Rouge at 5 PM (we really should have already been in New Orleans), it was Friday rush hour and an accident to boot and we sat for an hour in Baton Rouge traffic. We finally made it to new Orleans a little after 7. We found our hotel (Queen and Crescent - four blocks outside the quarter on Camp), checked in, and then wandered out to find something to eat.

Our hotel was pretty close to the Aquarium of the Americas since we were on the Canal side of the French Quarter and we had found out before heading to New Orleans that the IMAX at the aquarium was showing Matrix: Reloaded. We had been wanting to see it again and seeing as how we were pretty tired from the drive, we decided it would be a good thing to do upon our arrival. We popped over to the box office and picked up tickets and then headed to the French Quarter to find something to eat. After an extremely mediocre dinner (we were starving, we didn't look around too much), we wandered around a bit before it was time for the IMAX (starting at 9:45). The IMAX version was pretty cool. It was really neat having it so huge and vivid. I have two major complaints. First, I didn't like looking at every last detail of the actors faces for close-ups. You could see every pore on their skin. Weird. Second, the CG looked seriously fake at that size. When Neo was fighting all the Smiths, it was so obvious that nearly the entire fight was CG. In addition, some of the Smiths are stand-ins and it was really noticeable on the IMAX format. Otherwise, it was very cool to see it that way.
