Cancun - Day 4

We spent the morning hanging out on the beach. We lounged about in beach chairs for awhile and when that got boring (about 15 minutes later) we dove into the ocean. The beach has a flag system that tells you about the condition of the sea at that moment. Red means really rough, don't go in the water, yellow is moderate, swim at your own risk and green means calm. The whole time we were in Cancun we never saw green flags, only red and yellow ones. The confusing part is that they will have red and yellow ones out at the same time. So on Friday some portions of the beach were yellow and some were red, presumably the undertow and waves were less strong in the yellow areas? I don't know, at any rate, there were some pretty big waves. So we did some wave jumping and swimming until we were all tired out and then went back to our beach chairs.

After we had a light lunch, we headed across the street to the lagoon side to the marina that belongs to the resort we were staying at. At the marina, I got a quick lesson in sailing a sunfish (a small two-person sailboat) and Roger and I took it out onto the lagoon. After we sailed the little boat around the lagoon for awhile, we got bored and took it back to the marina and went back to our hotel room smelling like lagoon and feeling very much in need of a shower.

After we cleaned up, it was still fairly early so we hopped on a bus and went to some of the shopping areas at the northern end of the Hotel Zone. We found a big Mexican crafts flea market type thing and started shopping for some souvenirs. As we walked through the market, the men stood in the doorways of their shops calling at us to try to get us to come inside and look around. "You will find the best price in here, amigos!" "Senora, come in and take a look, I am cheaper than he is!" "You will find the lowest prices in my store, just come inside and shop, cheaper than KMart!"

We purchased a couple of little things here and there and then ate dinner at a little Mexican restaurant. On our way back to the bus stop, we saw a big sign with a delicious looking piece of chocolate cake outside an Italian restaurant. At the same moment, we stopped dead in our tracks and looked at each other before making a beeline for the restaurant where we enjoyed chocolate cake and coffee.
