Cancun - Day 5

We spent all of Saturday morning trying to figure out what we wanted to do that day. We really wanted to go visit a really cool cave site called Aktun Chen. We had read about them in our travel book (where they were listed as a must-see) and visited their website. We visited the travel agency in our hotel, but the only tours to Aktun Chen depart on Wednesday, so we had already missed it. Besides that, we really wanted to go see the ruins at Tulum but the only tours there were combined with a visit to Xel-Ha, another eco-park like Xcaret, which we already had our fill of.

We investigated renting a car, which intimidated us a bit in a foreign country and tried to find another travel agency with a tour to one of these two places. After searching all morning, we gave up and realized we didn't have enough time to get down there any longer anyway so we went back to the travel agent in our hotel to see if there were any activities to do that afternoon.

We had been curious about the horseback riding and there was a bus leaving for the horseback riding ranch, Rancho Loma Bonita, at 1:30 so we signed up for that.

I had only been on a horse one time, with my mom when I was young. We rode bareback and I hung on to her while we trotted around on the horse. I am definitely a beginner. Roger on the other hand to rode horses competitively when he was younger (at horse shows) so we were very different levels.

We had a really good time riding the horses. We took a nice ride through the jungle and then out to the beach where we got off the horses and rested for awhile while some people took horses into the ocean to swim. Roger and I didn't bring our swimsuits so we didn't ride the horses into the ocean, but some people did and said it was really cool. Roger galloped his horse along the beach which he said was really fun (though apparently the horse wanted to go faster than Roger was supposed to let him). When my horse got to the beach corral he decided the sand looked cool and inviting so he started to lie down on the sand and I had to leap off before he started to roll around in it (we had been warned they might try to do that). The people at the ranch were really nice and helpful and we were really glad we decided to go riding. I really want to ride horses again at some point!

All in all, what started to be an uncertain day, turned into a really fun afternoon!
